How to run this session
Stages and timing
- Outline and large opening
- Cover the lower half of the frame
- Finish the whole frame surface
- Draw the low base
- Make the rear triangle
- Join the sign to the base
- Brace and check the complete sign
What gets built
The pupil uses the relationship between positive form and negative space to construct a readable sign.
What it practises
- Intentional use of positive form and negative space.
- Comparing readings and revising a composition.
Success criteria
- Observation: 7 min: once cool, view the sign against white and coloured backgrounds, straight from the front and back. Record four brief observations and identify what the empty space contributes. The brace stays outside the opening from both sides.
- Ask your partner and a person from a neighbouring pair for two separate descriptions without knowing your title. Each describes before hearing the other; exchange observer and author roles. Compare both readings with your intention, without treating the answers as a guessing game.
- Discussion: 5 min: independently revise your sketch, mark a change in the position or shape of the opening and explain its purpose. Answer: how does the background change the reading, and why is negative space part of the composition? If unfinished, use the demonstration model; the sketch and explanation remain your own.
