How to run this session

Stages and timing

  1. Build a broad frame
  2. Connect the symbol to the frame

What gets built

The pupil designs a readable functional sign and improves it using other people’s responses.

What it practises

  • Designing a readable symbol
  • Collecting and interpreting feedback
  • Justifying a design revision

Success criteria

  • At least two people recognise the function without a title; the author records one justified revision.
  • Record a prediction before testing. Two people from another pair who have not seen the sketch or learnt the destination answer separately, without consulting. Use 5 m first, then 2 m, with the same angle and white background. Give no title, answer menu or hints. Do not reveal the intention between readings. Record four raw answers on paper: person A, 5 m: ____; person B, 5 m: ____; person A, 2 m: ____; person B, 2 m: ____. Also identify whose model was tested and the order. The same readers may remember the earlier view; these are two people, not four independent opinions.
  • Compare the answers with your intention only after all readings. Check whether at least two people recognised the function; also record the distance at which they recognised it. Record non-recognition honestly. Next to the first sketch draw a simplified sketch and identify one change: I change ____ because response ____ showed ____. Do not build a second sign. The new sketch alone does not confirm improved reading of the physical sign.
