How to run this session

Stages and timing

  1. Draw the bottom stem ladder
  2. Reinforce and rib the stem
  3. Lift the cooled stem
  4. Bud: draw the base and tongue
  5. Bud: build the three-dimensional dome
  6. Repeat bud fabrication ×24
  7. Assemble whorl 1 of 6
  8. Assemble whorl 2 of 6
  9. Assemble whorl 3 of 6
  10. Assemble whorl 4 of 6
  11. Assemble whorl 5 of 6
  12. Assemble whorl 6 of 6
  13. Draw four narrow leaves ×4
  14. Add a pair of leaves at 45 mm
  15. Add a pair of leaves at 78 mm

What gets built

Create a natural rhythm by repeating small three-dimensional elements.

What it practises

  • Spatial rhythm and regular arrangement around an axis
  • Layered fabrication of small volumes and supported PLA welding

Success criteria

  • There are exactly 24 buds: six whorls of four. Each whorl is rotated by 20° relative to the previous one.
  • Four narrow leaves form two pairs at different heights. The ribbed stem remains straight.
  • Once fully cool, turn the sprig slowly by the lower stem. Buds are visible from every side and stay attached; do not bend the stem or tug the parts.
